"Social and Mobile Shouldn't Be Distant from Learning": Presented by Shelly Blake-Plock, President & CEO at  An Estuary, LLC

Just as social and mobile technologies have changed the face of communications, entertainment, politics, and business networking, so too are they changing the ways we learn online. Join in this conversation as we take a look at what’s going on “under the hood” of social and mobile technologies and discuss what these developments mean for academic institutions and corporations looking to maximize the accessibility and impact of online learning offerings.

Shelly Blake-Plock is especially active in the fields of education and technology, and is President and CEO of An Estuary, a tech company based in Baltimore, MD. A former classroom teacher, Shelly was editor-in-chief of TeachPaperless -- an award winning blog called "one of the web’s most vital, influential collections of conversation and commentary about the intertwined worlds of digital technology, new media and education" by EdTech: Focus on K-12.

"Beyond Likes and Hashtags: Leveraging Social Media for Learning, Training and Networking" : Presented by Dr. Kimberly Wilson, College of Education at Temple University

This presentation will help socmephobes (those who fear social media) and experienced users alike get more out of social media.  In this informative and interactive program, participants will be introduced to the basics of social media for the purposes of training, learning, and networking. The program is divided into three areas:

1. Best practices

2. Case studies and examples

3. Suggestions and guidelines for using social media effectively

The effective use of social media in these contexts will be discussed using case studies and real-life examples.  Participants will learn how to incorporate social media such as Twitter, Pinterest and YouTube into their training even if they have little or no experience with it.  Whether you love social media or fear it, you’ll leave the program with a whole new outlook and concrete actions you can take immediately to elevate your work to the highest level.

Dr. Kimberly Wilson teaches full-time in the College of Education at Temple University. She has been the recipient of several teaching awards, including the 2011 Temple University Honors Professor of the Year and the Violet B. Ketels Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2008.  Dr. Wilson’s research focuses on the role of technology for social action and how social media can be used to partner with communities. She is a frequent contributor to a public education program on Twitter and maintains a number of Pinterest boards that she uses in her courses and public education efforts.  Dr. Wilson was an “early adopter” of wikis, blogs, and videos for use in the classroom and was one of the first faculty members to teach an asynchronous online course at Temple.
