"Micro Instructional Design for Problem-Based and Game-Based Learning"

Instructional design is both a process (macro) and a strategy (micro).  Micro instructional design models should provide a formula for designing user experience, engagement and interaction that supports learning.  In this session you’ll explore David Merrill’s Pebble in the Pond (PiP) instructional design model for problem-based learning and consider how it can also be applied to game-based learning design.

Presented by: Andy Petroski coordinates the Learning Technologies Master of Science (LTMS) program and learning technologies at Harrisburg University as Director of Learning Technologies and Assistant Professor of Learning Technologies. His work at Harrisburg University has included efforts in the areas of educational technology strategy, games and simulations, classroom technology, web 2.0, patient education, social learning and faculty development. As an award-winning instructional technologist with more than 15 years of eLearning design and development experience, he has designed and developed technology-based learning in multimedia production firms, independent consulting, corporate learning and education. You can learn more about Andy on LinkedIn at and on Twitter at @apetroski.

Tour Harrisburg University and the Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies (CAELT) and step into the Virtusphere, where virtual reality meets real life. Safely traverse a real or imagined 3-D world in micro or macro. Walk through the human nervous system, a battleground, a crime scene, an alien planet, or even a data set. Virtusphere transcends the physical and financial limitations of time, space, and materials. The Virtusphere is a versatile simulation platform comprising a 10-foot, hollow ball of ABS plastic, hardware that includes wireless head-mounted display goggles, and software.  Also, view 3D printing in action.  3D printing is the process of making a three-dimensional solid object from a digital model.  The digital model can be manually generated from a CAD or 3D modeling program or the model might be generated by scanning an object.  Finally, visit the Consumer Insights Research Laboratory which provides sensory science and market research support for regional food companies and is also built for usability testing of interactive, multimedia products.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology provides innovative undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in science and technology that lead our students to successful careers. Our experiential learning model results in graduates that are highly sought by employers in the Capital Region and beyond.  The University's Center for Advanced Entertainment and Learning Technologies (CAELT) advances the use of entertainment and learning technologies across a variety of industries, and aims to build a talented workforce in interactive media and learning technologies, as well as serve as a regional champion of this rapidly growing field, by coordinating with other innovative new media organizations throughout the nation.
