"Universal Design Strategies for Online Learning" presented by Ben DeSantis, Project Consultant @ MCIU
The Office of Professional Learning (OPL) within the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) is charged with providing dynamic, effective, and cost-effective professional learning services for MCIU member schools. One component of these services that is growing is online learning for professionals. In recent years, the MCIU has expanded its online offerings for educational professionals, including teachers, support staff, and administrators. As with any targeted audience, there are specific requirements that we must be mindful of, but we largely rely upon universal design strategies for our online learning options. Come hear about the different types of options we offer, our design process, and specific strategies that we employ to keep our online learning engaging, meaningful, and effective.
Ben DeSantis is a Project Consultant in the Office of Professional Learning at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU). As part of his responsibilities, Ben designs and assists with facilitating online professional learning opportunities for K-12 educators, ranging from brief continuing education seminars to certification programs. Prior to coming to the MCIU, Ben was a teacher at a public high school in the county.

Personalized Learning, Inquiry, Project-Based Learning, the 4C’s, all reflect a recurring theme in education predating Dewey, the perennial battle cry of curiosity, stifled by the very institutions meant to nurture it. Together we will explore the foundational elements that enable the paradigm and cultural shifts necessary to support authenticity and learner agency, specifically empowering student to be co-designers of learning. Philip Vinogradov is a Google Certified Innovator, Director of
Technology, and Instructional Technology Specialist who is passionate about leveraging emerging technologies to support transformative teaching, personalized learning, collaboration, and design thinking. With 20 years of classroom experience, he has led workshops on gamification and challenge based learning at ISTE, PETE&C, Google in Education Summits, and presented on leveraging emerging technologies to transform practice at PETE&C, NAIS, and NSTA conferences. Philip continually reminds those he works with that “We cannot teach our students everything, we empower them to learn anything”.
